About General Employee
General Employee builds AI employees for service businesses. Our product answers calls, texts, and emails, books appointments, follows up with leads, and works inside the software a business already uses.
We are a small, founder-led team shipping into live customer workflows where reliability, judgment, and measurable outcomes matter more than impressive demos.
About the role
This is a high-agency, project-based engineering internship with direct founder mentorship. You will take on a real production problem and shape the project around the strongest evidence of what you can build.
The work may sit in our web application, AI agent runtime, customer integrations, evaluation systems, or internal tooling. It will be scoped to ship and become useful, not to live in a separate intern sandbox.
What you'll own
- Take a scoped problem from investigation and proposal through implementation, testing, and release.
- Build in TypeScript across a modern Next.js application or contribute to our agent and integration services.
- Use AI development tools effectively while understanding, reviewing, and verifying the work they help produce.
- Write focused tests and documentation so another person can trust and extend what you ship.
- Learn from customer workflows, production behavior, and direct feedback instead of working from artificial exercises.
- Communicate progress, risks, and tradeoffs clearly as your ownership grows.
What success looks like
- You independently deliver a useful production project with clear evidence that it works.
- Your scope and judgment grow because you learn quickly from code, customers, and feedback.
- The team continues using or building on what you shipped after the internship project ends.
What we're looking for
- Strong programming fundamentals and enough JavaScript or TypeScript experience to contribute to a production codebase.
- A project, demo, GitHub repository, or other evidence that shows initiative and technical curiosity.
- The ability to learn unfamiliar systems, ask precise questions, and keep moving when the path is not fully specified.
- Clear written communication and comfort receiving direct, detailed feedback.
- Interest in building useful AI systems, product experiences, integrations, or engineering tools.
- We care more about what you have tried to build and how you think than your school, degree, or pedigree.
How we work
AI is part of our daily workflow. We use coding, design, and research agents to move quickly, but we own the judgment, verification, and production outcome. You will work directly with the founder and customers, have broad autonomy, and carry work from an ambiguous problem to a deployed result.
Equal opportunity
General Employee is an equal opportunity employer. We evaluate candidates on evidence of their work, judgment, and potential, and we welcome applicants from all backgrounds.
