About General Employee
General Employee builds AI employees for service businesses. Our product answers calls, texts, and emails, books appointments, follows up with leads, and works inside the software a business already uses.
We are a small, founder-led team shipping into live customer workflows where reliability, judgment, and measurable outcomes matter more than impressive demos.
About the role
We are looking for a designer who codes or a frontend engineer with exceptional product and visual judgment. You will own design in code across our marketing site, onboarding, and the operating surfaces customers use to manage their AI employees.
The work starts with rough founder direction, screenshots, customer feedback, or an ambiguous product problem. It ends with a polished, accessible experience running in production.
What you'll own
- Design and build responsive product experiences with React, Next.js, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS.
- Turn loose direction into clear flows, strong information hierarchy, precise copy, and production-ready interaction details.
- Own the complete experience, including loading, empty, error, success, mobile, keyboard, and reduced-motion states.
- Evolve shared components and design tokens so the product becomes more coherent as it grows.
- Use motion where it clarifies hierarchy, feedback, or state without making the product feel theatrical.
- Verify your work in the browser across breakpoints and protect it with focused Playwright and visual-regression coverage.
What success looks like
- The gap between a product idea and a production-quality experience gets materially smaller.
- Marketing, onboarding, and application surfaces feel like one intentional product rather than a collection of pages.
- You ship quickly while improving accessibility, consistency, and regression safety.
What we're looking for
- A portfolio that shows exceptional craft in real, shipped interfaces. The quality of the work matters more than a specific number of years.
- Strong React, TypeScript, CSS, responsive-layout, and component-system skills.
- A sharp eye for typography, spacing, hierarchy, interaction timing, accessibility, and the words inside an interface.
- The ability to move from design judgment to implementation without a handoff gap.
- Comfort with direct feedback, fast iteration, and explaining your decisions with concrete reasoning.
- Good judgment about when to use AI tools, when to inspect the underlying system, and how to verify the result yourself.
How we work
AI is part of our daily workflow. We use coding, design, and research agents to move quickly, but we own the judgment, verification, and production outcome. You will work directly with the founder and customers, have broad autonomy, and carry work from an ambiguous problem to a deployed result.
Equal opportunity
General Employee is an equal opportunity employer. We evaluate candidates on evidence of their work, judgment, and potential, and we welcome applicants from all backgrounds.
